This is solid, true-to-the-region Bordeaux at an affordable rent; a cultured meatball wine (in the best sense of the word), sourced from whole grape growers from different parts of very voluminous AOP Bordeaux. This ‘basic appellation’ has in no way benefited from the star sprinkling of the legendary top wines, so the price level is still moderate, while the quality has improved significantly over the past decades – a result of better field work and vinification, which benefits the wine consumer. Very few regions with world-class wines offer good, affordable basic wines: it had never gone in Burgundy!
Fief du Marquis Bordeaux is a blend of mainly merlot (80%) and equal parts cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. Fief du Marquis has a surprising amount of fruit richness for the price range, but it also manages its Bordeaux DNA. In other words, this is a dry wine with a light body, mainly red berry fruit with a touch of blackcurrant.
A little structure in the aftertaste means this is probably more a food wine than a cozy wine, but the wine is now quite sociable.
Enjoy this red wine in its youth, served at around 17-18°.
