Vi de Vila Porrera is made from Garnacha Blanca (60%), Picapoll (20%) and Pedro Ximenez (15%) as well as other local grape varieties, which are sourced from 12 different vineyards around the village of Porrera. The vines are between 7 and 80 years old. The different grape varieties are handpicked in baskets of max. 12 kg. to avoid jamming during transport. On arrival at the cellar, they are de-stalked and gently pressed. Half of the must is fermented in new wooden barrels, while the other half is fermented in cement tanks. Fermentation takes place in both cases with the grapes’ own yeast. After blending, 80% of the wine is matured in cement tanks and the rest in so-called “damajuana” (glass container of approx. 50 l.) for approx. 9 months. Production is limited to approx. 8,000 bottles in total.
Vi de Vila Porrera Blanco is a very characterful wine throughout. In the scent, you will find bold, mineral and slightly exotic tones, reminiscent of sherry (the 15% Pedro Ximenez comes through nicely), with nuances of ripe peaches and apricots, but also hazelnuts. The taste has a nice balance between freshness and velour, with good structure and complexity – and again a character of “flour” from the sherry. You sense a discreet woody character from the fermentation in new casks. The wine ends very harmoniously, dry, with nuances of salt (sea), peach stone and almonds. A very exciting and unconventional wine.
Serve with grilled fish, lobster bisque and other seafood dishes or, for example, with a strong soup.
The wine cooperative Cooperativa Agricole de Porrera, which produces this wine, is located in the town of Porrera on the river Cortiella in the southeast of Priorat. The cooperative itself was founded in 1932, but the vineyards are considerably older. In this area, the vines share land with almond and hazelnut trees. For many years, Porrera has had the status of a top producer, especially after two of the area’s wine pioneers, Josep Lluis Perez and his daughter, became associated with the site and understood how to exploit the full potential of the vineyards (approx. 60 ha).
Porrera was bought a few years ago by Castillo Perelada – a famous producer of both wines (in DO Empordà-Costa Brava and in Priorat (La Casa Gran)) and cava (in Penedès). The collaboration between the two companies and the Perez family, all of whom are used to working with wines of extremely high quality, has already borne fruit. For example, many of the ancient, abandoned vineyards are located at an altitude of 350-600 m.a.s.l. been restored or replanted, much to the delight of the local growers who supply the grapes to Porrera. This has meant a huge renaissance for the village and its surroundings and given new hope for the future generation of wine growers. Cooperativa Agricole de Porrera produces, among other things, the series Cims de Porrera and Vi de Vila Porrera.
