The Trebbiano grapes for this wine come from the organic vineyard Vigne Nuove in Capestrano, where the grape variety was planted in 2002. The planting is dense (6,700 vines per ha) and means that each vine does not need to produce as many grapes. Trebbiano is usually harvested late, as the vineyards are at an altitude of 400 m., where the change between cool nights and warm days with good ventilation (Gran Sasso) results in a long maturation.
After the mashing, the grapes are macerated with their skins for approx. 12 hours, to extract as much fruit character and freshness from the grapes as possible. Fermentation is then carried out at low temperature in steel tanks. The wine is bottled in its pure youth, after only 3 months of maturation “sur lie” (on the lees) in steel tanks, in order to preserve as much fruit character and freshness as possible.
Trebbiano from Valle Reale has a nice golden-green color. The scent is fresh and immediate with nuances of citrus fruits and white flowers. The taste is delicious and mineral with a perfect harmony between fruit, dryness and structure. Serve it at a cold buffet, with fish or seafood dishes, with pasta dishes or with Mediterranean-inspired vegetable dishes. It will also be great for a small glass on the terrace.
The Valle Reale winery is located on the border between the Gran Sasso and Maiella National Parks, right next to the Laga Mountains, known for more than a hundred years to be the home of the Mariscano wolf.
The terroir around Valle Reale is quite different from the rest of the Abruzzo area. The immediate neighborhood to the mountains and the height where the vines grow (300-350 m.a.s.l.) give large temperature fluctuations between day and night, something that gives the grapes a long ripening process and thereby much more finesse, aroma and nuance in the wines.
It is the young generation of the Pizzolo family, Leonardo Pizzolo, who today owns and runs this historic estate, assisted by oenologist Giulio Vecchio and consulting oenologist Leonardo Valenti. In continuation of practicing sustainable production on the farm for many years, in 2009 they took the step to fully controlled organic production and in 2012 were certified organic.
