Rheinhessen’s ‘Roter Hang’ is one of Germany’s most mythical wine mountains, as the slope here has always stood for some of Germany’s richest Riesling. It is only approx. 5km long and only up to 200m wide and yet it backs no less than 8 recognized Climats, all of which have the top Grosse Lage classification. One of the most mythical of these is Pettenthal, which we are proud to present here. Pettenthal got its name way back in 1753, is a good 20ha in total. It rises from the Rhine with up to 70% slope and east/southeast exposure, which receives extra solar radiation for a large part of the day due to reflection from the river. Pettenthal GG is St. Antony’s finest interpretation of dry wine from this renowned field.
Colour: Straw yellow with green reflections
Aroma: Intense aroma with both ripe citrus fruits, grapefruit, gooseberries and also richer fruits such as pineapple, ripe pear, quince, a little fresh melon and guava as well as a whiff of Mediterranean herbs and wet stones.
Taste: This is the definition of big, dry Riesling! Eminent in its composition of rich fruit, fullness and powerful opulence combined with aching intensity and steely, straight backbone. Extremely easy to drink and you just get happy at the same time that it satisfies every need for depth, complexity and place typicality. A great wine!
Serving suggestion: Hugely versatile in its possibilities of use. Can be enjoyed chilled with everything from light fish and shellfish right up to almost being able to pull a red steak. Give it a try, you can hardly go wrong with this wine.
St. Antony has been producing wine since the end of World War I, and was officially founded in 1920 by the “Guten Hoffnungshütte” in Rheinhessen. The first vintage was 1918. A year when Europe was in ruins. Since 1990, the small craft winery has been a member of the Verband Deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitätsweingüter, and has been working with certified organic standards since 2006.
St. Antony owns a beautiful wine landscape near the Rhine, and has 60 hectares of vineyards – primarily in Rote Hang in Nierstein. In addition to Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc, they also grow Pinot Noir and Blaufränkisch.
