San Leonardo is the flagship wine of Tenuta San Leonardo and is made from Cabernet Sauvignon (typically around 60%), Carmenère (30%), and Merlot—a blend that varies slightly depending on the vintage. The wines from the different grape varieties are spontaneously fermented and aged separately, with only the best barrels selected for the final blend. The wine is aged for two years in new and 1–2-year-old French barriques (225 L) and remains in the cellar for at least a year after bottling.
The wine has an intense, dark ruby-red color. The aroma is highly complex and deep, with dark notes of wild berries, pepper, and a hint of vanilla. Immediately after pouring, the wine may seem slightly closed, but with some aeration, a cascade of flavors emerges. It offers plenty of spice, a velvety texture, and concentrated notes of dark berries, vanilla, and a touch of oak. The finish reveals the high Cabernet Sauvignon content, with excellent structure and a beautifully balanced dryness. A truly complex wine. A great companion to lamb and game dishes, poultry in red wine sauces, beef, and even mature white mold cheeses.
