Amarone Cru, as it comes from the vineyard from which it got the name “Pegrandi”. It stands out compared to other amarones from the same cellar. I think it’s a good way to approach this wine of ours, which is so fashionable these days. It’s hard to believe the high alcohol content given how (relatively) light this wine is. It’s a wonderfully smooth Amarone that will make you want another bottle.
This Pegrandi begins with an opulent color and concentration with brilliant ruby reflections, followed by a nose with a wonderful bouquet of sweet fruit, tobacco and tar or smoke. It offers intense aromas of black cherries, berries, raspberries, but also spicy notes and firm tannins, wonderfully balanced all together like a married couple of the elderly. The finish is intense for a long time, appetizing with an aftertaste of sweet cherries that leaves a lasting impression on the palate.
Recommended pairings: Excellent Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Pegrandi Vaona with pheasant with walnuts and truffle; pork tenderloin, pasta and beans; Amarone risotto and fresh pasta with duck ragù, troccoli and squid stuffed with spicy sauce; Florentine Chianina steak; Fried tuna in a pan; Spicy Taleggio cheeses, Pecorino, Parmigiano Reggiano and sweet cured meats.
Pegrandi is an impressive Amarone that speaks volumes for the territory that shaped it. The wine delivers aromas of pickled fruit, cherries, raspberries and blackberries. But there are also sophisticated toast and spice notes that add brightness and personality. Creamy, cheesy risotto would be a perfect pairing match.
Remove the cork and decant the Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Pegrandi Vaona before serving at a temperature of 18-20 °C, in a large balloon glass.
