Mas de Boislauzon – Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages 75 cl.
Vin de France
Quite different serious Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages than what one usually sees on the shelves, which year after year are proclaimed as ‘bargains’ by Robert Parker. Here, the otherwise very worn phrase ‘mini-Chateauneuf’ is exceptionally in place. And this is no coincidence: Very low yields are harvested from the 50 years + certified organic old vineyards, which come from 26 different plots; some on Chateauneuf’s northern border, others a little further north, but all with the same common denominator: a subsoil of clayey limestone with a coarse, rocky top layer.
The grape composition is just over 50% Grenache, while the rest is divided between Syrah, Mourvèdre and a little Carignan, which after almost a month of maceration and fermentation is stored for a year in both large barrels and tanks – completely like their Mas de Boislauzon Chateuneuf ‘Tradition’. Simply, the maceration has not been so harsh, so this is a wine that is somewhat more kind-hearted as a young person. However, this is really ‘Southern Rhônevin’, which is masculine and typical of the place – not sweet and soft!
Aroma and taste reveal a characterful, healthy, juicy and tightly packed wine that has a balanced blend of red and dark fruit with black olives, Provence herbs and a slight medicinal undertone towards carnations. Great fullness harmonizes with the structure of the wine, so nothing seems flooded despite the wine’s considerable corpus.
We recommend a serving temperature around 16-17 °.
If you can keep your fingers off the wine now, you will be able to store it in a good cellar for 5-10 years.
