On the nose, this Riesling presents itself with an abundance of exotic fruit and very appealing notes of yeast. Dragonstone Riesling is very exotic and shows nuances of peach and apricots. The finely integrated, lively acidity is offset by notes of ripe Mirabelle plums. Because of its freshness and presence, this Riesling is very appealing and can certainly be seen as a newcomer to our fruity Riesling world.
While Johannes Leitz’s dry wines strengthened his reputation in Germany and Europe, no other wine made him as popular in the United States as Dragonstone. The pure quartzite soil that comes from Rüdesheimer Drachenstein lends a saltiness to the orange citrus flavored wine that buffers the acidity and counteracts the palpable sugar. Hints of floral perfume in the inner mouth and the piquancy of peach pit add further depth to what has consistently ranked among the world’s most remarkable Riesling values.
Johannes Leitz took over the family winery from his father in 1999, having been in charge of the winemaking since 1985. Under Johannes’ ownership, Leitz has only gone one way – up! The quality has increased from good to world class and they have managed to expand the fields with some of the best parcels around the town of Rüdesheim.
The hillside west of and immediately around Rüdesheim is one of the most magical terroirs in the entire world for the production of wines from the Riesling grape – and thus one of the most magical terroirs in the entire world for the production of white wine!
This is where we find, among others, the parcels Berg Schloßberg, Berg Rottland, Berg Roseneck and Berg Kaisersteinfels, all four of which enjoy the highest possible classification and recognition in Germany’s hierarchy.
