Kopke Port – Quinta São Luíz Vintage Port 2019 75 cl. 20%
Douro Valley Port
Quinta São Luíz is the flagship property of the Sogevinus group and the place from which their ‘single quinta vintage port’ (SQVP) comes.
The Quinta is located in the middle of Cima Corgo’s best port wine terroir, a few kilometers before Pinhão, right on the banks of the Douro River, where steep shale mountain sides rise almost vertically from the river.
The grapes behind the wine come from the property’s oldest vines, closest to the river, where they stand on ancient stone terraces. Here, ‘field blends’ dominate, the old planting method with countless grape varieties on the same field, which are harvested simultaneously and vinified together.
The grapes from here make up more than half of the blend and the rest are grapes from old Touriga nacional vines. The fermentation took place on steel, whose more reductive nature promotes the fruit-identical aromas in the wine.
The 2019 vintage presents itself completely opaque with youthful, sweet fruit with dense, juicy nuances of dark berries, especially blueberries, blackcurrants and elderberries with slate minerals and a firm, ripe tannin that keeps the sweetness in check. 2019 is not the most violent vintage in human memory, but on the other hand it has a beguiling acidity freshness that can be in short supply in more classic vintages.
The children’s lesson that vintage port must be stored for decades before being enjoyed does not always hold true. As we usually say: young vintage port tastes great if you’re not afraid of blue teeth!
However, 20 years durability is not a problem either.
Vintage port is by definition bottled without filtration, so remember to decant the wine if it is stored for more than 2-3 years.
