La Numéro Huit (’number 8’) is a new cuvée from Gour de Chaulé, a project initiated by Stéphanie’s son, Paul. Generously granted by his mother, he was allowed to use the estate’s oldest Grenache vines (along with 1% Mourvèdre) from a sandy plot planted around 1900! The vinification was minimalist, with whole-cluster fermentation, a total of five weeks of maceration, followed by 1½ years of aging in a fashionable concrete egg, and finally bottled without filtration, fining, or added sulfur.
Gour de Chaulé produces genuine, ‘handcrafted’ Gigondas with soul from ancient vines; wine created with respect for the environment and the area’s traditions. For the past ten years, Stéphanie Fumoso has led Gour de Chaulé, steering it in a direction of minimal chemicals and as little sulfur as possible in the wines, made achievable through meticulous hand-sorting of grape clusters.
It is clear that Paul Fumoso draws inspiration from what Emmanuel Reynaud is working on. Stylistically, this wine is not as ethereal or oxidative as Reynaud’s various wines. However, one can forget about the most potent and somber prestige editions from Gigondas: this appellation offers an enormous stylistic range, where La Numéro Huit is a red-fruited, elegant Gigondas. The 2022 vintage is a phenomenal wine, floral, generous, with intensity, great precision, and a mineral focus. Cherry, strawberry, and herbes-de-Provence seem to take the lead in this young yet juicy wine.
The bad news: only 1,200 bottles were produced…
As this is a new cuvée, it’s hard to predict its development potential, but if Cuvée Tradition is any indication, there’s likely no need to rush.
