Fontanabianca Dolcetto d’Alba 75 cl.
Piemonte – Italy
Ruby with violet reflections. Round bouquet of elderberries, blueberry muffins and dried spices. Well-structured on the palate with a well-proportioned body, beautiful ripe tannins and a touch of delicate almond tones in the round finale.
“Notes of ripe dark and blue berries with chocolate, dark licorice and a hint of mushroom. Medium bodied with dusty tannins and juicy dark fruit in the middle. Juicy finish.” JAMES SUCKLING
The young winemaker Matteo Pola, son of Fontanabianca’s founder Aldo Pola, has impressed all critics in recent years with the fantastic wines he has made. But it is not difficult to understand why: the family is blessed, as he will be the first to tell you, with some of the best vineyard sites in the village of Neive in the heart of the Barbaresco appellation.
Fontanabianca (so named because it overlooks a natural spring, the “white fountain”) sources grapes for one of its top wines from the Bordini cru, one of Barbaresco’s rare examples of a sorì, a dialectal word denoting a place with ideal exposure (sorì means “a place where sunlight first arrives, early in the morning”). With a steep slope that reaches almost 280 meters above sea level. at its peak and classic white calcareous soils it is known for the elegant, structured wines it produces.
Another of their top wines is made from Serraboella cru, one of the most sought-after vineyards in the Neive township. Here the height reaches 320 metres, with south-westerly exposure. The wines it delivers are known for their structure and enormous aging potential.
Did you know?
At Fontanabianca, the father-and-son team divides the work between them: Aldo, the father, is the winery manager and Matteo, the son, makes the wines. Aldo is known as one of the best growers in Barbaresco and Matteo was mentored by one of the greatest Nebbiolo producers of all time, Beppe Caviola.
