This is a collectible, grand Vacqueyras that can rival Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
The grape composition is 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah, sourced from about 4 hectares of vineyards with soils ranging from clay-limestone to poorer, more stony ground—a diversity that contributes to the complexity of the finished wine.
Vinification combines traditional and modern methods, with 100% destemming of the grapes, hydraulic pressing, and a long, cool maceration and fermentation, followed by aging in large foudres (4,000–6,000 liters), after which the wine is bottled by ‘gefühl’ (instinct) before it reaches its first year.
This is a deeply colored, dense, and powerful wine with rich fruit and noticeable yet softened, mature tannins. The aroma and taste feature notes of olive tapenade, rosemary, dark berries, and a hint of black pepper, with a vibrant dark fruit flavor. The finish is impressively long and showcases a juicy intensity.
If enjoyed young, a few hours of decanting is recommended. Domaine Saint-Pierre Vacqueyras is best enjoyed slightly below room temperature—at 16–17°C.
Young wines pair well with large Bordeaux glasses, while a mature version would likely benefit from a larger Burgundy glass.
