Del Maguey was founded by Ron Cooper in 1995 and is the world’s leading bottler of high-quality mezcal. Ron’s mission is to make great mezcal accessible outside of Mexico—something that was previously incredibly difficult, almost impossible! Leading this mission is Del Maguey’s exceptionally well-developed ethical code, which goes far beyond industry standards. The goal is not to exchange glass beads for gold but to spread awareness of one of the world’s most complex and culturally significant spirits in a responsible way that gives back to the communities where the mezcal is produced. It ensures that the small palenques can continue making mezcal as they have for hundreds of years, with the utmost respect for tradition, nature, and the cultural, ritual, and social significance mezcal holds in Mexico’s small villages.
With Del Maguey, the concept of single-village mezcal became synonymous with quality mezcal. Each mezcal in the series comes from a unique distillery in different villages across Mexico. They are not blended into large batches but bottled individually, showcasing each village’s terroir—from the soil where the agaves grow to the naturally occurring yeast in the distillery.
The Vinos de Mezcal series features highly limited releases made from rare agave varieties such as Tobalá or Arroqueño.
The bottles’ charming labels, depicting idyllic (and sometimes slightly mystical) scenes of everyday Mexico, are illustrated by Ken Price.
