A blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2020 Haut-Bailly was harvested from the 9th to 25th of September. It has an alcohol of 14.3%. Deep purple-black in color, it prances out of the glass with naturally beautiful notions of fresh black cherries, violets, mulberries and boysenberries, giving way to hints of redcurrant jelly, star anise, tilled soil and menthol. The medium to full-bodied palate is delicately crafted with velvety/grainy tannins and fantastic freshness framing the perfumed red and black berry layers, finishing on a lingering fragrant-earth note.

Initially, you find a display of flowers before moving on to all of its cigar wrapper, spice, blackberry, currant, black cherry, smoke and hints of forest leaf. Deeply concentrated, vibrant and refined, the palate is packed with multiple-layers of perfectly, ripe, red fruits, a fabulous sense of purity, silky, soft, polished tannins and ample lift in the finish, providing the backdrop to age, evolve for decades. Drink from 2027-2060.

The nose is fruity, elegant and offers a nice freshness, a certain concentration (in finesse), density (in finesse and control) as well as a nice definition. It reveals notes of bright wild blackberry, small bright black berries, small notes of violet, tea, wild strawberry, hints of mocha as well as a discreet hint of sweet blond tabaco, racy minerality, sweet spices. The mouth is fruity, balanced, all in control and offers juiciness, complexity, a nice freshness, a nice definition, purity, a discreet tight character as well as a nice brightness and purity of the fruit. Nice concentration/density and darkness but all in elegance. On the palate this wine expresses notes of wild pulpy/ripe black berries, pulpy/ripe cassis, small notes of wild raspberry associated with touches of violet, black plum, black tea/bergamot, small dense berries as well as fine hints of zan, toasted, nutmeg, caramelized hazelnut and an imperceptible hint of sage in the background (brings complexity and adds freshness). The tannins are elegant and nicely soft. Presence of discreet hints of mocha/cacao in the finish/persistence.

Intens og frisk, men fuld af kompleksitet og med en imponerende dybde, tekstur og elegante tanniner. Solen skinnede meget på Château Haut-Bailly i det udfordrende år 2020, så vinene bør blive fyldige, kraftige og generøse.
Château Haut-Bailly blev til Château Haut-Bailly, da familierne Goyanèche og Daitze købte og samlede en række af Graves’ bedre vinmarker tilbage i 1530’erne. 100 år senere blev det hele købt af Firmin Le Bailly og Nicolas de Leuvarde, som havde penge på kistebunden grundet deres bankarbejde i Paris. 100 år senere igen, helt præcis 1736, tog irske Thomas Barton styringen og fik spredt rygtet om Château Haut-Baillys vine i England og Irland.
I 1872 hed ejeren Alcide Bellot des Minières, og det var her, at slottet tog sin nuværende udformning. Han gennemførte en mere videnskabelig tilgang til vinproduktion og indledte en guldalder, hvor Château Haut-Bailly blev solgt til samme priser som Premier Cruerne Lafite, Latour, Margaux og Haut-Brion. Efter Alcides død fulgte en ustabil periodem dog uden at det gik ud over vinens kvalitet. Derfor blev slottet i 1953 klassificeret som Cru Classé de Graves.
I 1998 købte den amerikanske bankmand Robert G. Wilmers vinslottet og satte gang i en lang række investeringer – dog stadig med de samme winemakers ombord. Wilmers døde desværre i 2017, men i dag leder familien slottet videre.
Slottet ligger lige ved porten til byen Bordeaux, og de 30 hektarer vinmarker ligger i hjertet af appellationen Pessac-Léognan på venstre bred af floden Garonne. Her vokser 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot og 3% Cabernet Franc. Landskabet er bakket, nogle parceller ligger højt, andre lavt og det varierede vandtryk på vinstokkene skaber variation i udtrykket. Her vokser bl.a. fire hektarer vinstokke, der har 100 år på bagen, plantet i sin tid af Alcide Bellot des Minières.
