Blandy’s Madeira – Colheita Malmsey 2007 75 cl. 20%

Single Harvest Dolce Rich Madeira

Blandy’s Malmsey Colheita 2007 is a sweet madeira made from the Malmsey grape, which is also called Malvasia. Blandy’s works with 26 different Malmsey growers, primarily in the São Jorge area in the north of the island. The wines are aged for 15 years in American white oak casks in the traditional “Canteiro” system, where the wine is gradually moved from the upper floors of the warehouse, where it is warmest, to the lower ones, where the temperature drops. Only with this method does the wine get exactly the right balance, concentration and precision!

Colheita 2007, 2600 bottles have been tapped in 2022 and a further part of the harvest is still on the tray to mature further. It is already at an excellent place in its development. It is quite sweet with its 125 g/L residual sugar, and then it has Madeira’s characteristic high acidity (7.8 g/L), which gives incredible nerve and intensity to the wine. Beware! Highly addictive!

Colour: Amber gold.
Aroma: Dried fruits; date, plum and fig jam, brown and burnt sugar, hazelnuts and walnuts.
Tasting notes: Very full and rich with generous sweetness and then the wonderful freshness of Madeira. Very rich and long aftertaste. Notes of dried fruits macerated in Brandy, fig, apricot, crunchy, wood and roasted nuts.

Serving suggestion: Perfect to enjoy slightly chilled for e.g. cakes, preferably with orange or nuts or for chocolate desserts.

Decanter
“Mid-amber with a coppery glint; lovely leathery complexity on the nose with raisins, dried figs and crystalised fruit; very smooth and suave with, glorious richness offset by a streak of acidity with a long, mouthfilling, figgy finish. A classic Malmsey with complexity and poise. Serve on its own after dinner or alongside a crème brûlée.” – 97 points

Whether you’re after a good but affordable bottle or a fancy frasquira from your birth year, Blandy’s is the absolute best bet. It is, quite simply, the island’s top producer!
